Family-run usually means family quality. You know this, right? No fancy trappings, no starched white tablecloth or fine china, no flashy leather bound wine list appears at many family-run restaurants these days. But if they cook Italian as good as the family that runs Picasso's does, we don't care. As it is, the small space twinkles with white lights and greenery, but the smell distracts us from becoming too snobbish, thank God. We usually start with the good bruschetta, then move on to the jumbo mushrooms Italiano, stuffed with crab meat and mozzarella and well-seasoned with Italian herbs. Soup is a star here, too: rich with butter and cream, the subtleties in a soup of the day were the well-balanced flavors of Portobello mushrooms, onions and garlic. A real masterpiece. Pasta is made fresh every other day, and baked lasagna proved it; though mild, it was toothsome, thick and hearty. Linguine met with approval, too. If you have to, eat dessert there and take the unfinished entree home. Picasso's matriarch is the dessert chef, and she frowns on taking her items home. Ok, mama, we'll finish at the table. --Angela Curriden |
